Okay, so over the last few months I’ve noticed several times my car (15 BRZ) take 2-4 more cranks than usual to start. This in itself isn’t really alarming, but once so far it just kept cranking and cranking until I hit the button again. After that it started fine. Tonight, though, it started up normally, then made a sound like if you cough into your fist, coming from the right side, twice. It was loud enough and produced enough of an impact that I half wondered if a rodent had been sleeping on the belt or something.
I might just be paranoid, but if this is a sign of something problematic I’d rather know sooner than later.

Any warning lights? Leaving lights on overnight draining battery?

not sure how easy it is to check plugs on an FA20, could just be a loose one in one of the banks

I’ve seen the same long-start issue caused by a weak battery.
Not sure about the “coughing”, though.

Take it to the dealer, that’s the only reason to have a new car in the first place.
Have you filled up with gas recently, could be bad gas (I also like the loose plugs idea but boxer engines do not make plugs easy to reach).

High and low pressure fuel pumps can both cause these symptoms exactly, though I’m not sure if your car has direct injection (I assume it does).

it’s an absolute PITA on these cars, need to jack up the engine to get any decent level of access

would definitely take it to the dealer to have a look at it, that’s what the warranty is for, could be a weak battery as they put a stupidly small battery in it from factory than people have had upgraded under warranty

Yeah but how do you diagnose something that happens a few times a month?

It’s the Subaru FA20 which has Toyota’s D4-S direct and port injection on it. I would assume it uses pure DI at low loads and starts using the port injection when it needs more fuel, but I’m not sure.

I’ve got an 2007 STi. You can get to the plugs without jacking up the engine, but it requires removing a bunch of stuff from the sides of the engine bay. To just check if they are tight you might be able to snake a wrench in there, but it would be tough.

they should be able to test the battery

2007 sti is completely different to the gt86/brz, the engine is mounted very low in the twins

STi is also mounted very low, that is why Subaru uses the boxer type engine. The engine is right between the wheel wells.

ok let me put it this way, the fa20dit in the wrx cannot fit directly into the twins because the turbo is mounted below the engine and would end up dragging on the floor if it was mounted as low as the current fa20 in the twins (as well as different mounting points)
